Originally opened in 1938 as Belfast Harbour Airport, Belfast City Airport is a single runway airport with a rich history. Home to the development of several famous aircraft including the legendary Shorts Sunderland flying boat, in 1960, Belfast City hosted the maiden flight by the world's first vertical take-off and landing jet, The SC1, a forerunner to the Harrier 'JumpJet'!
Belfast City opened its doors as a commercial airport in 1983, since when it has undergone considerable development. In 2001, a new terminal opened, and in 2006, the Airport was renamed in memory of the Belfast-born footballer, George Best, famous for his appearances both on the national team and for Manchester United. George Best Belfast City Airport is now a major base for Flybe and handles around 2.5m passengers each year.
In 2008 Belfast City Airport approached Rezcomm, looking for a solution that would support its ongoing development by promoting city break destinations. The online holiday booking service continues to make life easier for passengers, and the Airport has grown into a busy travel hub for Northern Ireland.
